In a recent statement, Dr. Abiy highlighted the following:
The Pretoria Agreement brought relief to the people of Tigray.
Basic services such as telecommunications, electricity, banking, and air transport have been restored after a complete halt. Production had ceased, factories had shut down—but these are now resuming.
The Tigray regional government has been re-established. Previously, there was no functional administrative structure.
Displaced persons have returned to Raya and Tselemti.
However, those displaced from Welkait have not returned, and DDR (Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration) has not yet been implemented.
Dr. Abiy stated: “Those displaced from Welkait must return. The government has a firm position on this. DDR must also be executed. Trying to frame these issues as federal problems is a mistake. The federal government has a strong desire to resolve the Tigray issue peacefully.”
He warned that:
For some, war may seem like a game, but for the people, it brings only suffering.
While some speak about war lightly, they do so from a distance, unaffected—“But for the youth, it is a tragedy.”
“100% of the people of Tigray have seen that war offers no benefit,” he added.
Dr. Abiy criticized the international community’s response:
“Even if the world wants to talk about Tigray or any other region, the attention isn’t consistent. Many countries are dealing with conflicts of their own. They don’t have the time or energy to truly care. If they had time, they’d help Sudan first.”
On modern warfare, he remarked:
“We must understand the nature of modern warfare. This is not the era where controlling or losing a mountain is the measure of victory. Iran and Israel don’t fight over mountains anymore. The world has changed.”
He also addressed internal discontent:
“There are people who say: ‘The government has fallen; it’s been defeated by Fano and Shene; now is the time.’ These people need to look back at history. When Somalia invaded Ethiopia, there was no army. When Italy invaded Ethiopia, there was no army. Ethiopia has always defended itself—without the need for a fully built army.”
He expressed concern over misplaced hope in foreign support:
“Some believe there are people or countries who will come to our aid. That is another tragic misconception. These countries can’t even support themselves. There is a difference between having moral sympathy and the capacity to offer support. Even in major wars, the global response has been limited. The world economy is struggling, and very few—if any—can afford to help others.”
Finally, he emphasized that what Tigray needs is peace, and the solution must come through dialogue and negotiation, not continued conflict.
