According to Dr. Alemu Disasa, President of Metu University, the incident occurred on June 29, 2025 (Sene 22, 2017 E.C.) within the university compound, where more than 14,000 students had gathered to sit for the national exam. Dr. Alemu noted that a number of students had exhibited inappropriate conduct after arriving on campus.
The university, working in coordination with the examination command post, investigated complaints filed by female students alleging that they were forcibly touched and had their clothing removed by the three male students. The university confirmed the validity of the claims following an internal inquiry.
“The perpetrators engaged in non-consensual physical contact, including forcibly stripping clothing and inappropriately touching private areas of the victims,” said Dr. Alemu. “As a result, legal and disciplinary actions have been taken, and the students have been disqualified from sitting for the national exam this year.”
The accused students reportedly came from different regions: one from Becho Woreda in Ilu Ababor Zone and the other two from East Wollega Zone.
Following the disciplinary action, the university reported an improvement in student behavior on campus. Dr. Alemu emphasized the importance of educational institutions providing awareness training on proper exam conduct and ethical behavior.
He also encouraged female students to remain vigilant and protect themselves from situations that could expose them to harassment.
The university reiterated its commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment for all students and underscored the importance of upholding the integrity of the national examination process.
